About Mr Ruwan Fernando
With more than 25 years of experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology Mr Fernando is one of the senior consultants at St Mary’s Hospital. In 2006 he was appointed as a Consultant in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and a Subspecialist in Urogynaecology at St Mary's Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
He is also an Honorary Senior lecturer at the Imperial College, London. In his NHS role, in addition to work on the labour ward managing complicated pregnancies he has regular Urogynaecology outpatient clinics and a number of operating lists. He is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and also the co-director of the RCOG Subspecialty programme in urogynaecology at St Mary’s Hospital.
Training & Career
Graduating in 1990 from University of Colombo Sri Lanka with honours, Mr Fernando completed 3 years postgraduate training in Colombo Sri Lanka and obtained Master of Surgery (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) from University of Colombo Sri Lanka. He received his UK specialist training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology between at Southend Hospital, Essex; University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent; Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds and Mayday University Hospital, Croydon, Surrey.
He completed two years subspecialty training in investigations and treatment of complex bladder, bowel and pelvic floor dysfunction and is accredited as a Subspecialist in Urogynaecology.
Achievements
He has done extensive research on prevention and treatment of perineal injury during childbirth and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree from Keele University, Staffordshire for his research . He has published over 100 research papers and has won several prizes for his research including the Harold Malkin Prize for the best original research by the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in 2006.
Mr. Fernando is the first author of the national guidelines on “Management of 3rd and 4th degree perineal tears” produced by the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and also the principal author of the Cochrane Review on “Methods of repair for 3rd and 4th degree perineal tears”. He also conducts national and international workshops to teach the doctors and midwives how to identify and repair perineal tears after childbirth.
He is an internationally renowned expert on Pelvic Floor Dysfunction after Childbirth and is a guest speaker at national and international conferences. He is a member of the RCOG Scientific Advisory Committee and was member of the Guideline Committee which review and publish national guidelines on Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Mr Fernando is also a member of the Education Committee of the International Continence Society. He also acts as an expert witness in medico-legal cases.
Personal Life
Mr Fernando is married with two daughters. He enjoys gardening, cycling, singing Sinhala and Hindi music and playing Badminton at club level. He has participated in charity cycling events in London and raised money for charities.
