What is Urogynaecology
Urogynaecology is a sub specialty of Gynaecology which covers services that provide assessment, investigations and treatment for women with urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse, recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder pain and pelvic floor injury after childbirth including faecal incontinence.
Mr Fernando is accredited by the RCOG and recognised by the GMC as a Subspecialist in Urogynaecology for treating women with urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse, recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder pain and pelvic floor injury after childbirth including faecal incontinence.
Mr Fernando has undergone two years of additional specialist training under the world renowned Urogynaecologists Miss Ranee Thakar and Mr Abdul Sultan at the Pelvic Floor Unit at Croydon University Hospital, Surry from 2004 to 2006.
In 2005 he was awarded Doctor of Medicine (Research) by Keele University, Staffordshire for his research on Management of Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury following childbirth.
He has won several award for his research including the Prestigious HAROLD MALKIN PRIZE – for the best original research Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in 2006.

Maternal Pelvic floor injury following childbirth
Mothers may suffer from different degrees of perineal and pelvic floor injury during childbirth. Some are considered as minor injury (1st and 2nd degree tears) and some are considered as major injury (3rd and 4th degree tears).
